Obituary for Martin (Marty) L Raddatz

Martin (Marty) L. Raddatz, age 68 of Staples passed away at his home in Staples on October 21, 2019. He was born on May 19, 1951 in Bay City, Michigan to Carolyn (Goeckerman) and Ivan Raddatz. Marty married Mary Schilke in Benton Harbor, MI on March 20, 1971. They began their life together serving the United States Navy stationed in San Juan Puerto Rico. Here they started their family, and Shelli and Jen were born. Faith and family were very important to Marty. He loved to fish even when they weren't biting. Marty was a putzer, loving cars and trucks. He loved building and making wonderfully creative works of art for his family. His grandchildren have many special memories with the the creations he made such as wonderful tree houses, handmade cars, cartoon like wooden guns, battery powered carts, a pluthera of deer stands made of recycled goods and lots of 4-wheeling trails- the fun never ended with grandpa! His resourcefulness and creativity was inspiring to all! What some saw as an overwhelming unorganized pole barn was his treasure chest of never ending potential, in which he knew right where everything was.
Marty loved to travel and be adventurous with Mary by his side for 48 years, he took the time to enjoy small moments which meant a 3 o'clock beer and ice cream at the end of every day. He was an"all for the family"kind of guy, he took time to visit, loved to help fix things and wasn't afraid to tackle anything!
Marty worked on farms growing up, served in the Navy, served as Postmaster in New Ulm, Annandale and retiring through Bertha. Out of all his career paths he enjoyed being retired the most.
Martys' love for Mary was beyond the hopes of most marriages. Until his last days he would write cute little poems, notes and make up little songs to tell her how much he loved her. His love for her was inspiring to all and taught us how to love by example. We will miss him, but Heaven has gained a treasure. Memorial services for Marty will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the Staples Alliance Church in Staples with gathering of family and friends from 1:00-2:00pm.
Marty is preceded in death by his parents, Carolyn and Ivan; sister, Marcia Raddatz-Longcor; sister-in-law, Patty Raddatz.
Marty will be deeply missed his wife, Mary; daughters, Shelli (Ryan) Rau of Staples, Jen (Tim) Brawthen of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Colton, Rylie Julianna, Cash, Sarah, Amanda and Luke; brother, Mark Raddatz; brother-in-law, Mark Longcor.
