Obituary for Eleanor H. Simons

Eleanor H. Simons 100-year-old resident of Upper South Long Lake and Sun City, AZ passed away July 23, 2019. A memorial service will be held at 4PM on Sunday, July 28 at Halvorson Taylor Funeral Home in Brainerd, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Vaale Cemetery in Maple Grove Township.

Eleanor was born on May 2, 1919 in Perley, MN, the 12th of 13 children, to Iver and Bertha Jacobson. She was the first child to be born in their Sears Catalog Home. On September 20, 1941 she was united in marriage to George “Mac” Simons in Horace, MN. Eleanor worked as a dietician and as a nanny for the Gamble family. She enjoyed playing bridge, Scrabble, telling jokes, and traveling the world with Mac. Eleanor was a baker extraordinaire, and made lefsa and cookies for “the old people.” She made Hardanger well into her 90’s, and drove her children to church until she was 99. Eleanor knew how to stretch a dime into a dollar. She will be remembered as a loving mom, grandma, and great grandma. Upon her arrival in heaven, we know dad welcomed her and she fulfilled her wish of sitting in her mother’s lap after waiting 93 years.

Eleanor is survived by her children, Judy (Roger) Bolan, Jane (Gary) Hopping, Mike (Grace) Simons, Linda (Tom) Herzog; grandchildren, Mark, Greg, Anne (Mike), Jennifer (Justin), Christine (Dennis), Carol (Scott), Katie (Dennis), Kellie (Clint), Laura (Sean), Lindsey (Allen), Tyler (Danielle); great grandchildren, Jackie, Aaron, Leah, Jeffery, Thomas, Isabelle, Kaylene, Jack, Riley, Alex, Benjamin, Cameron, Katelyn, Jameson, Jacob, Jerome, Callie, Sawyer, Spencer, Kamden, Connor, Carson, Colby, Lily, Dashielle, Valence Eleanor.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, George; grandson, Matthew Simons; brothers; and sisters.

Arrangements are with Halvorson Taylor Funeral Home in Brainerd.

I had the pleasure of meeting Eleanor at quilting Monday’s at our church in Sun City AZ. She’d arrive in her golf cart with a smile, friendly conversation and a joke to entertain us at the coffee break. I will never forget her and look forward to meeting her again in our heavenly home. With sympathy, Jean English
